Interview

What's your earliest musical memory?

My earliest memory has to be visiting my family in Italy and going to the local bars every evening. They would play a range of latin music – reggaeton, salsa and bachata –  which I was massively influenced by growing up and because of that I always gravitate towards playing latin house songs in my sets. I always remember dancing in big groups with my family for hours! My favourite songs when I was little were Danza Kuduro - Don Omar and La Bomba - King Africa.

When did you first get into DJing?

I got into DJing just over a year ago. My friends started playing weekly nights at our uni’s student bar way before rona and they definitely sparked my interest but at the time I was too scared to try it myself. Over the first lockdown I bought some cheap decks and immediately started mixing house tunes  – not sure if I could venture into any other genre!

What would you say has been your favourite gig to date and why?

My favourite gig would have to be the very first one I played at. It was with Sisu at their Southbank summer reunion in June. I was super nervous but it instantly felt really natural and I had such a good time; my friends and family all came to support which helped. It was a big standout moment for me as I got to meet some people who I’d hadn’t met in person before but I had been working with at Sisu! I felt like my set really complemented the whole energy of the day – I brought a range of my all time favourite afro and latin house songs which were perfect for the sunny weather. My fave tunes I played were Canoa - DJ Gregory and How He Works - Louie Vega.

How did you find recording the mix? Could you talk us through a couple of the standout moments from your set?

With this mix I put together a typical set that you would find me playing out – a mix of deep house intertwined with afro and latin tunes. One of the standouts moments for me was when I played Coge el Paso by Lay Payara and La Perla. I only recently added it to my collection and I love the vocals and deep drums which run throughout the track. Another moment for me was when I played Bulb Exposure - Has Been. The track slaps and I always bang it out when the mood gets deeper.

How has the last year of living in a pandemic been for you? What has been the biggest challenge and most positive outcome from spending so much time at home?

This year has really allowed me to put all my focus on practising and improving my DJing. I’ve never had a proper chance or had the time to put all my energy into one thing, so it's been really nice being able to do that. The past year has been mad with the opportunities I’ve received. I started working for Sisu and met so many talented people and it’s just been so fun being involved in this powerful community.

The biggest challenge for me was probably not being able to DJ with my friends – I know that if I started doing this earlier I would have learnt so much quicker. It was tough playing in the same space time after time with no one to help guide me and share the interest with!

Have you been out since clubs reopened? If so, where have you been and what was the experience like?

I recently went to Queens Yard Summer Party – I had such a sick time! Moxie’s set was a memorable moment for me, I’ve been listening to her weekly NTS takeovers for a while now and they bang! I’m obsessed with her b2b mix with Bradley Zero so it was so good to see her live! The atmosphere was better than I imagined, I really thought this day would take a long time to come. It surprisingly all felt so normal!

What's next for you?

I have two mixes coming out in the next couple of months which I’m really looking forward to people hearing. One is with Digging the Underground – a community I met when I played at The Cause – and the other is for Beach Podcast – a big house music platform which I can’t wait to get involved with!

I’ve also got loads of smaller gigs coming up where I’ll be playing b2b with some close friends – expect lots of house, disco, soul and funk!
