Scaefa | Troubleshoot Mix | Episode 007 |

Lane, Will Lane, is the name of our guest for episode 007 of the mix series (please believe us when we say this wasn’t planned). The 25-year-old – who goes by the artist name Scaefa – has been producing music since his school days and has had releases on labels such as La Bonne Musique, Draconian Audio and Zone Focus to name a few.

His latest release, “Oxytocin”, is an acid-laden club track with dreamy synths running throughout and has already caught the attention of many renowned selectors, most notably Jaguar, who played the track on her BBC Radio 1 Dance show recently.

For his Troubleshoot mix, Scaefa showcases a range of rave, jungle and dub techno club beats from artists such as Tom VR, Indent and Ray Keith, and includes some of his own tracks as well. The mix is paired with an interview where he shares how he got started in production and DJing, his favourite pieces of equipment and software to produce music with, and his favourite gig to date.

Interview

What's your earliest musical memory?

I remember listening to a lot of Gorillaz, Peter Gabriel, Green Day, and Led Zeppelin albums during long car journeys when I was travelling to see family or to go on holiday when I was little. My dad was really into prog rock and early heavy metal and my mum always had 80s pop/dance stuff on. It was quite a broad range of music and I’m still very much into lots of different things now.

How did you first get into production and DJing?

I got into production through school. When I started getting into electronic music in my teens I used to spend my lunch times in the music department making terrible beats inspired by The Prodigy and Pendulum on Cubase. Drum and bass and dubstep sparked my interest in DJing and I ended up working for an events company, DJing weddings and parties and learnt the ropes that way.

What is your favourite piece of equipment or software to produce music with?

I’d probably have to say the Prophet V from the Arturia collection. It’s my go to synth at the moment, I love how it sounds and it’s good for nearly any category of sound. Emulations of hardware are never perfect but this one is close enough for me to achieve great results. It’s littered through every track I make and I can’t see myself dropping it for some time.

How did you find recording the mix? Could you talk us through a couple of the standout moments from your set?

Recording the mix was fun; I’m used to only having an hour so getting that bit extra to explore was a treat. Having not played any club shows at the time of recording I wanted to make something pretty upfront, and used the extra time to build into that.

The start and end of a set is super important to me. Louf is one of my favourite artists at the moment so starting there and moving into some tech house felt like a great way to get going. I ended the set on my dude Sempra’s track “This Way”. I don’t usually play quite that fast but I really love his music and it felt like a really good emotional place to finish the mix.

What has been your favourite gig to date and why? And what does it feel like being able to play out again after such a long time away?

It’d have to be my Canary EP launch night at the Global Cafe in Reading a couple of years back. It was my first time putting on an event and my first club set as Scaefa, so safe to say I was pretty nervous! That said, it was an absolute blast and everyone got well into it. I didn’t expect the turnout or reaction to be quite so good. Shoutout to my guy Stephen Read and the good people at La Bonne Musique for helping me put that one together, definitely set me up for the road ahead.

I’ve only played one gig back and it was a black tie festival, so definitely a strange/new experience! It was great though, and I’m gassed to hit the decks again in the future. I felt a bit rusty having been out of action for so long, but live music being back really does the soul a world of good, and definitely inspires me to make tunes for the clubs in a way I’ve not felt for some time.

What’s next for you? Have you got anything coming up that we can look forward to?

I’ve got a couple of mixes coming out soon and I’m guesting on some radio shows, plus an exciting charity project throughout November which my next release will be a part of.
