XXOK | Troubleshoot Mix | Episode 010 |

Seoul born and raised DJ and producer Dongwoo Lim, who goes by the moniker, XXOK, has been steadily rising the ranks of South Korea’s electronic music scene for some time. The 28-year-old’s sets have garnered attention in his home country for their heavily dance-focused and rhythm-based elements, blurring the lines between techno and breakbeat.

XXOK has largely become known for his work for the ‘MIDDLE OF NOWHERE’ project, a series of electronic music performance sessions which have been taking place in abandoned venues across South Korea since September 2021.

For his Troubleshoot mix, XXOK showcases his passion for UK dance music, featuring tracks from the likes of Overmono and Bailey Ibbs which have inspired him greatly. The mix is paired with an interview, in which he shares his earliest musical memory, standout moments from the set, and how coming from South Korea influenced his music taste.

Interview

What’s your earliest musical memory?

When it comes to electronic music my earliest musical memory was the short live video clip from Daft Punk’s Alive 2007. I got into DJ culture immediately after watching that and went on to discover artists like The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Digitalism, Boys Noize and so on.

How did you first get into DJing and production?

I got into DJing when I was 14. I was just surfing the net and I found a little portable DJ device, ‘Pacemaker’ by Tonium which was able to mix two channels with several types of FXs with a fundamental 3-band EQ. So, I saved up and eventually got it and started to learn how to mix songs properly (still have it to reminisce about those early days!) Many of the producers whose music I was interested in back in those days were using Ableton to make tracks, so I started watching tutorials and started to learn the program and that’s how I got started in production.

What is your favourite piece of equipment or software to produce music with?

Honestly, I haven’t used a lot of hardware or many other production softwares apart from Ableton so far.  Ableton is my super core tool for making music with my handy controller ‘Ableton Push 2’ and I’ve recently been using the  ’Octatrack MKII’ performance sampler from Elektron – it’s my main brain kit for a DAWless set up with my other synthesisers and drum machines. Using this gear helps me to create happy accidents which usually doesn’t happen when using my computer to produce.

How did you find recording the mix? Could you talk us through a couple of the standout moments from your set?

I recorded this mix through ‘XDJ-RX’ from Pioneer with one turntable which is a ‘AT-LP120XUSB’ from Audio-Technica in my studio.

At the beginning of the mix, I mixed my own short intro track with  ‘Catapult’ by Overmono. I was so impressed by the glitch radio sound at the beginning of Overmono’s track, it inspired me to make an edit of the track with the voiceover saying ‘Access OK’ over and over with different pitches with glitch radio sounds littered throughout.

Towards the end of this mix, I played one of my unreleased remixes ‘ ᛋᛋIVIVIV -  Nightcrawler (XXOK Remix)’ which will be coming out soon. This track has a groovy break sound with a fatty reese bass – a great DJ tool to mash up with dance tracks.

How has coming from South Korea influenced your music taste and how would you describe the electronic music scene in your country?

Although the Korean electronic music scene has been seriously underground compared to other countries' electronic music cultures, we have a few great venues that have been chasing their own musical tastes. Most people love techno which has definitely helped me get into the underground club scene as well as be influenced by Korean DJs and producers.

What DJs/producers would you say have inspired you the most and why?

I would say that I've been inspired by ‘Overmono’ the most. Their DJ and live sets make people dance with not only typical 4x4 techno but also breaks, 90s rave, and a lot of rhythm-based UK dance music which I really enjoy.

Have you got any releases planned for this year or projects you're currently working on that you can tell us about?

I am releasing my first EP this year as well as recording a live set for a project called ‘Middle Of Nowhere’, which is  an electronic live music session that has been taking place  in South Korea since September, 2021.
